James Joyce was born in 1882 in Dublin, where his father was sufficiently prosperous to send him to a fashionable Jesuit boarding-school, and sufficiently improvident to be virtually penniless a few years later. Partly because of the steady decline in his family’s fortunes, and partly because he himself was a little disposed to fudge the evidence, it is difficult to place Joyce tidily in a social class. Virginia Woolf, distressed by the milieu of Ulysses, concluded that its author must be ‘a self-taught working man’. Mr. Wyndham Lewis (who was educated at Rugby) makes fun of Joyce’s fictional alter ego, Stephen Dedalus, for his anxiety to appear gentleman. Perhaps the Joyces became shabby more pronouncedly than they remained genteel. But class consciousness is not important with Joyce as it is with the other great novelist of the age, D. H. Lawrence. Priest, artist, citizen are Joyce’s categories; not gentle and simple.
